Did you take a vacation this year?
As you sit in front of your computer, rushing to get the current project of the day finished, does vacation cross your mind? Sure we joke about it to others, saying "Boy I could sure use a vacation, I'm stressed!" but how many really do? The most common excuses for not taking a vacation of course are "I've got too much work to do to leave right now" and "We have no money to go anywhere".
You may say to yourself "I don't need a vacation", but the fact is everyone needs a vacation regardless if it's to Disney World or your own back yard. We all need breaks, and come back less stressed - ready to work harder and faster than we could before. Think of it as a way to renew or "reset" yourself.
If you are saying "I can't afford a vacation" or "Really, I absolutely can not leave at this point", take a mini vacation! Here are some ideas on how to take a mini vacation:
- > Go camping for the weekend. No temptation to turn on the computer since you are away from everything electronic
- > Take your kids on a day long trip to the park. Don't forget to bring a picnic!
- > Take up a hobby you enjoy. Don't turn this one into a business; remember you want to get away from the stress! Chances are this hobby will stick with you, and you will want to take breaks from business more often (which yes, is good!).
- > Spend the day at the mall. If you can afford to treat yourself, do so. If not, spend the day window-shopping and hit the food court. Sometimes just feeling like you are playing hooky while everyone is at work is a good enough break.
- > Take your family to the lake or beach. Too cold to go swimming? Rent a boat or go fishing.
Remember as important as work seems, family is more important. You don't have to be rich to take a vacation, or go to an exotic place. Give yourself a break so you can be a better person and professional.
